Teamwork is a important life skill nurtured at the FFSC through group activities (food prep, chores), exercise (ice-breakers, team sports, alliance-based activities), nutrition education (group discussion), gardening, and care of camp animals. The camp represents a unit: all learn together.

Critical thinking, Problem Solving: Camp programs nurture decision-making and problem-solving skills through activities (journaling/food/exercise selection, food choices), in-depth group discussions, art projects (crafts, fine art).

Community Service/Involvement: Gardening activities at camp also help nurture community involvement as kids share “their” produce with family members and their communities.

CAMP LOCATION: Standing on the grounds of the former U.S. Steel Good Fellow Club Youth Camp, Dunes Learning Center is located in the heart of Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore in northwest Indiana, less than an hour from Chicago. Built in 1998, our modern facility is encircled by scenic trails, historic sites and one of the most biologically diverse ecosystems in the nation.

CAMP FACILITIES: Located inside Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, our 63 acre national park campus features ecological diversity seen few places in the world.

Ten, group-style modern cabins, each accommodating eight people (seven campers with one counselor), are equipped with comfortable bunk beds, bathroom facilities, and a shower. Heating and air conditioning allow for year-round comfort. Male and female campers use separate cabins, and are supervised by adults both inside the cabins and during all activities.

A large multi-purpose dining hall and activity center, Cowles Lodge, is the central hub of camp life. Meal times are an important parts of the camp day, providing opportunities for socializing, fun activities, and learning about food as a natural resource. A full-service kitchen is staffed by our own food service staff that can meet most special dietary needs.

YEAR-ROUND CAMP PROGRAMS: Dunes Learning Center operates in partnership with Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore delivering year-round curriculum and standards-based education programs that inspire curiosity, scientific literacy and environmental stewardship.

Interpretive Naturalist
General Description: Dunes Learning Center (DLC) is a residential education facility within Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore (INDU) working in close partnership with the National Park Service (NPS).
Interpretive Naturalists are key members of the program staff at DLC. They instruct children and adults regarding the diversity of ecosystems, plants and animals, and cultural history of the INDU and southern Lake Michigan region while developing their naturalist, outdoor education, and resource interpretation skills and techniques.
Interpretive Naturalists often work in pairs during the summer to give each the opportunity to shadow peers, provide and receive feedback, and learn a variety of teaching styles and techniques. During the fall season, Interpretive Naturalists may shadow NPS staff and have opportunities to attend professional development workshops.

Term of Position: Full-time Summer (June 10, 2016 - August 5, 2016) and/or Fall (August 14, 2016 – May 27, 2017). Must be available to work weekend and evening hours. Both seasons include 2 weeks of training. There is an unpaid furlough December 18, 2016 – January 1, 2017.

Responsibilities:
• Attend training workshops and regularly scheduled staff meetings
• Present DLC programs in natural and cultural history, inquiry-based science, and resource stewardship
for children; ages 8-17
• Lead half-day and day-long educational/interpretive hikes on Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore trails
• Conduct evening and weekend programs as scheduled
• Conduct research and make preparations needed for all assigned educational programs
• Ensure safety and well-being of program participants
• Assist in the maintenance of all program supplies, equipment, and facilities
• Maintain a Positive Mental Attitude (PMA)
• Comply with all Dunes Learning Center policies and represent DLC in a professional manner at all times.
• Perform all assigned duties critical to the operation of the Dunes Learning Center

Required Qualifications:
• Must have a BA/BS by June 10, 2016
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills
• Physically able to work outdoors in all weather conditions and hike several miles over hilly dunes terrain while carrying a 25-lb backpack
• Great independent worker and team player
• Possess valid driver’s license and have reliable transportation for local travel between housing and DLC

Desired Qualifications:
• Lifesaving and water safety certification
All Dunes Learning Center employees must submit to a background check and possible drug screening.

Benefits: $290.00 per week stipend, shared (private bedroom) housing, uniforms, First Aid/CPR training, meals when groups are in residence, and professional development opportunities.
